Maha Maamoun
Born 1972, lives in Cairo, Egypt. Maha Maamoun is interested in social conditioning and how the visual presentation of places and environments are augmented to appeal to different audiences. Specifically interested in the urban fabric of Cairo, her home city, Maamoun’s photographic works draw attention to the visual contradictions that surround her and the hidden layers of repression and desire that lie beneath each image.

In 2007 her work was included in Global Cities in the Turbine Hall at Tate Modern and in 2006 in Snap Judgements: New Positions in Contemporary African Photography at the International Center for Photography, New York, curated by Okwui Enwezor.

Maha Maamoun works with the Townhouse Gallery for Contemporary Art in Cairo.
