Born in Istanbul, Turkey, 1946, lives and works in Istanbul. Karamustafa works in a wide variety of media including painting, video and installation. Her interest in the consequences of migration, cultural identity and gender can be seen throughout her practice. For a recent solo exhibition in 2007 at the Yapi Kredi Cultural Center in Istanbul Karamustafa changed the entire exhibition space into a traditional red velvet-lined cinema in which to show her work and alter the viewers’ perception and experience of the space. Other solo exhibitions in 2006 were Works by Gülsün Karamustafa, Kunsthalle Fridericianum, Kassel, Germany and PUBLIC/PRIVATE, Durkers Kulturhus, Helsingborg, Sweden. Karamustafa has exhibited in group exhibitions internationally a selection of these include IstanbulEindhoven, VanAbbe Museum, Eindhoven (2005); How Latitudes Become Forms, Walker Art Center, Minnestota; Blood&Honey, Sammlung Essl, Vienna, Austria and Utopia Station, Venice Biennale (2003); Kwangju Biennale, South Korea (2000) and Orient/ation (Vision of Art in a Paradoxical World), 4th International Istanbul Biennial, Turkey (1995).
