Born in 1968 in Bulgaria, Ergin Cavusoglu lives and works in London. He is known for his complex single and multi-screen video installations that reframe his subjects’ surroundings. Cavusoglu often looks to the cultures and environments of Turkey for inspiration, to discover the collision of the contemporary and historical, the local as an implicated place in the context of its globalized position. This is true of the work "Thatakale", which shows the traditional, frenzied trading in currency and gold played out in its historical location in the Grand Bazaar of Istanbul, the sound of mobile phones and shouting set to the soundtrack of a Byzantine Choir. In "Quintet Without Borders", a collaboration between Cavusoglu and Konstantin Bojanov, individual footage of five gypsy musicians comes together to create an harmonious work combining cultural identity and community with that of sophisticated synchronization in the space of the gallery.
Ergin Cavusoglu’s solo exhibitions include those at Haunch of Venison, London (2004); Dundee Contemporary Arts, Dundee, UK (2004); Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art, Sunderland, UK (2006); and John Hansard Gallery, Southampton, UK (2006). He represented Turkey at the Venice Biennale in 2003 and received widespread public acclaim in 2004 when he was short-listed for the Becks Futures Prize.
