Avluda/In The Courtyard, DVD Installation, 2002
Cevdet Erek
Born in Istanbul, Turkey in 1974;  lives and works in Istanbul. Erek applies a variety of disciplines including architecture, mathematics and music to the making of his performance, video and installation works. His art is to combine their influence, to propose the essence of an original site-specific situation and subject, resulting in innately human reflections on time and space. For example, in "Avluda (In The Courtyard)", 3 projections and sound recordings present a composition that describes the pause in time and space of two unused courtyards located in an old university building in Istanbul. In Erek's video "Studio", which is presented in a scaled-down, sculpted version of the studio where the original act took place, his hands release an embedded rhythm like an off-duty percussionist or wind player seen impulsively tapping their thigh. While in the performance "SSS (Shore, Scene, Soundtrack)", a translation of nature takes place via the act of stroking a carpet, a process of recording, interpreting and playing back, through the medium of humanity captures the essence of the sound of the sea as it laps the shore.

Erek's first solo exhibition took place at Galerie Akinci in Amsterdam in 2008. His work and performances have been included in  group exhibitions including in Just in Time at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam; EurHope at Villa Manin CAC in Udine, Italy; Supremes, In order of appearance at the Living Art Museum in Reykjavik; Art For... at Platform Garanti CAC in Istanbul and Poetic Justice  at the 8th International Istanbul Biennial. Erek was on residency at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam from 2005 – 2006 and was awarded the Uriot Prize in 2005.
