Somersaulting Man in Mexico City, DVD, 5:30 min, 2001
Nasan Tur
Nasan Tur was born in Offenbach, Germany in 1974. He studied at the HfG Offenbach and the Städelschule Frankfurt/Main. Tur uses the mediums of photography, video, installation, performance and intervention in the public space for the investigation of social behavioural patterns and the influence of political actions. He often creates his work in the form of an art platform where the viewers can take an active role, such as in a recent work featured in the 10th Istanbul Biennial titled 'Backpacks'. Here  visitors were invited to borrow specially composed multi-task backpacks, that combined a selection of materials and props for particular acts.  On leaving the exhibition venue and entering the public realm with the backpack the participants could use the items they found in their chosen bag for acts such as forming a demonstration, making a public announcement, cooking on the side-walk, etc. Tur's videos often document planned but unusual acts by himself or other protagonists. In the 'somersaulting man' series, a man rolls head-first through different inner city areas sometimes both to the awe of some of his audience and also to the disregard of others.

Tur's work has been included in exhibitions such as the 10th International Istanbul Biennial, Istanbul; The 7th Internationale Foto-Triennale Esslingen, Kunsthalle Mannheim; Out of Loop, BICA-Brooklyn Industries Contemporary Art, New York, USA; EurHope 1153, Villa Manin-Center for Contemporary Art, Codroipo, Italy; art, life & confusion, 47th October Salon, Belgrade;  Ground Lost, Galerija Nova, Zagreb. Tur's work will be presented in forthcoming exhibitions in 2008 including the 6th Taipei Biennial, curated by Manray Hsu and Vasif Kortun, Taiwan and SCAPE Biennial, Christchurch Biennial of art in public space, curated by Fulya Erdemci and Danae Mossman, New Zealand.

Nasan Tur lives and works in London and Frankfurt.
