Born in Jerusalem. Lives and works in Tel Aviv.
Kedar's installations consist of video, photography and objects that create a world fabricated from the debris of society: cardboard, plastic, laminates and do-it-yourself innovative techniques, which together disguise the fundamental misery of failure. Her practice interferes in spatial settings and environments and leaves behind a trail of casual documentation. Remnants of actions create momentary illusions, which allow a range of meanings to subside. For example in the photograph "Untitled" Kedar situates herself on a graffiti-sprayed Theodor Herzl (the founder of the Israel) on the backside of a run down factory in downtown Tel Aviv. The intervention her body and femininity creates a site of dystopia on top of a utopian past.
The video "It Is Not What You Think It Is" was shot while riding a mini-cart in the 'Mini Israel Park'. Kedar was captivated by memories of childhood visits in the United States to fabricated cities, monumental film studios, and artificial landscapes built exclusively for Westerns and B-movies. The filmic style and musical score of this work propose a sense of adventure and escape, similar to that created by constructed sets of movies and and television dramas.
Kedar promotes and participates in artist-run initiatives and exhibitions in alternative and public spaces in Israel and abroad. She is one of five co-founders of Parrhesia group - a group of educators, social activists & artists from the fields of graphic & industrial design, photography, video and fine art who collaborate with organizations for social change, along with independent work in the public sphere.
Hadas Kedar received a BFA from the Fine Arts Department at Bezalel Academy of Art in Jerusalem and an MFA from Middlesex University in London. She has presented solo exhibitions in Israel, England and Germany including in 2005 Health at the Artist's House, Tel Aviv and in 2003 Woken by a greenish light, Luftraum Gallery, Frankfurt International Airport, (in collaboration with Alex Schady).
