Born 1977 in Istanbul, lives and works in Vienna.
Nilbar Gures' humorous drawings and fabric collages often refer to the domestic home, to chores, to family, to fashion and in particular patterned fabrics and very often to the women who tie these all together. Her female subjects invariably don a headscarf, their facial features and body shape obliterated by flowery print, or by a table, duvet or chair that they seemingly merge with and into. Yet, in each work, Gures' female subjects maintain a strong individuality and intimate sexuality. Her repeated cultural references consider issues of immigration, in particular the danger of aesthetic judgement and the need to view everyone as individuals and not as representative of any particular nation or religion. In works such as My Time the female subject is seen liberated from both the intensity of Gures' use of collaged fabric patterns, as well as from domestic or family responsibility. Here, the female character is seen reading a book. Her hair is free, her dress open and revealing and she leans back against the bud of a blooming violet facing a library of opportunity that weighs heavily upon the clutter and cleaning equipment that on this occasion will wait its turn.
Gures has recently participated in group exhibitions including in 2008 World One Minutes Today Art Museum, Beijing, CN; in 2007 Be realistic, aim for the impossible! curated by Halil Altindere, Karsi Sanat gallery, Istanbul, TR; Imagine there is an Art Work curated by Beral Madra, BMSuma Contemporary Arts Center, Istanbul, TR and in 2006 Kunstauktion: Menschenrechte MAK – Museum of Applied Arts,Vienna, AT; Arabesque Süperiör, Lothringer13 gallery, Munich; Wir machen das schon wieder, Andreas Huber gallery, Vienna, AT and Sammlung Dichter, Kaufhaus Osei, Vienna, AT.
