Born 1975, Lives in Cairo, Egypt. Sherif El-Azma is interested in using the codes and semiotics of local visual and audio media broadcast to recreate and deconstruct such representation. Since 1997 he has been primarily interested in producing single channel videos that deal with class issues, gender, urban environment and identity, as well as other recent works which take the form of publications, public performances and video installations.
His works have been show in the Townhouse Gallery for Contemporary Art (Cairo); Karim Francis Gallery (Cairo); Contemporary Arab Representations (Witte de Witte Center for Contemporary Art, Rotterdam); World Wide Video festival, Ashkal Alwan, Homeworks Forum (Beirut) and the National Film Theatre in London. His earlier works are archived in the Pacific Film archive in Berkley.
