Chourouk Hriech
Born 1977, lives and works in Marseille, France and Marrakech, Morocco.

The drawings of Chourouk Hriech describe a confluence of old and new traditions as seen and experienced in the cities of Morocco. Her patchworks of Islamic patterns scoop up elements of arabesque and modern architecture, nature and vibrant cultural celebration, featuring musicians, artisans and dancers. Often figurative elements are included tumbling over one another to gain picture space, but in Hriech's recent works a baseline grid defines a geometric and hence more abstract response to these lived environments. While all the drawings propose scenes of carnivalesque optimism they also hint at moments of urban friction and although executed in black and white, a sense of color lies beneath the surface, as the topology is in perpetual motion. As Hriech's city depictions burst from their own boundaries and those of the actual page, the fictional and real spill over into one another to create a social-historic fresco of urban improvisations.

Hriech has recently exhibited her drawings in New Ends Old Beginnings at the Bluecoat Gallery, Liverpool, 2008; Fiac, Acquisitions Fmac Paris, 2007; Projets Dessins..., Appartement22, Rabat, Morocco, 2007; Cosa Nostra, GlassBox, Paris, Show Off, Galerie O.Houg, Espace Pierre Cardin, Paris and Las cabras e las palabras, Can Filippa, commissariat Hangar/Becupu, Barcelona, Spain, all in 2006.
